Neuropsychology

A pituitary tumor can have a profound impact on an individual's ability to function properly and to maintain an appropriate psychological state. Cortisol excess and deficiency can manifest with extreme depression and growth hormone excess can lead to severe mood swings. Hypothyroidism and other neuroendocrine abnormalities are associated with alterations in consciousness, impaired mental abilities such as memory and concentration, or distressing changes in behavior. Fatigue, sexual dysfunction and other physical symptoms may present adjustment challenges. Neuropsychologists specialize in evaluating these impairments through diagnostic interviewing and comprehensive test procedures, and provide counseling to help patients and their families understand and cope with these and other symptoms. In some cases, cognitive rehabilitation strategies may be implemented, enabling patients to more effectively manage their symptoms and optimize their independent functioning. The neuropsychology service of the department of neurological surgery is also available to diagnose depression, mood fluctuations, and other emotional consequences of hormonal imbalance, and to provide psychotherapy or counseling to individuals and families.
